The Taranis project forms another building block of the Hager Campus. At the entrance to the factory premises, the building acts as a showcase and allows customers and visitors to observe testing processes from a safe distance. This addition to the existing research and development building provides spaces for electrical processes and, together with 'The Platform' building, currently in the planning stage, offers expansion space for test units and laboratories.
The building's volume responds to its prominent location and the particular requirements of the programme. Its monolithic geometry is softened by the texture and reflections of the scaled metal façade. This picks up the materiality from the façades of the Forum and the neighbouring project b31, yet sets a deliberate contrast to the existing production buildings.
A connecting space is created between the extension and the existing building, which serves as reception, exhibition hall and event location. This is defined by two long walls that allow visitors to view the processes that the building houses. The exposed concrete wall is animated by an arrangement of deep windows of varying sizes that draw the eye to the machinery in the generator room. The timber-clad wall opposite frames a view of the heart of the project: the test stand from which test procedures are controlled and monitored.
Both sides are connected through a light installation along the main cable line, which visualises movement of the current during the testing process. The roof opening above is structured by a rhythmic pattern of skylights and backlit textile cassettes. The calm combination of concrete and wood, the generous ceiling height and the light from the zenith lend an elegant effect to the small space in all its simplicity.
